The Mighty Dentist

Fear of God. I used to think that fear of God was a necessity in religion. Many people have told me: "You must fear God for He has power to kill you and take into account all the things that He can do with your life. He can wreck it or make a living heaven wherever you step. So be careful and fear Him." It's such a huge misconception. While diving into my own existential crisis, I asked myself - what is love for God then? If we say we love God thus we fear Him, doesn't it mean that we love Him just because we are afraid of Him? Do we have to love Him, otherwise we won't enjoy this wonderful life?

God made us with free will. He wanted us to fall in love with life, with this world. And it's wrong to think that those that don't share love for Him will be sent to the great depths of hell. We are free to not love Him too. Just like we have our presidents selected, there's nothing we can do afterwards - some love him, some deal with it and move on. This love I'm talking about is a lot different from the usual perception of love that we share between humans or animals. This love is universal, difficult to explain. Of course we surely can express love for Him in a more usual manner by being grateful, wanting to get to know Him, trying not to hurt, disappoint Him with our behavior, etc.

I sat and I kept thinking of the perfect comparison and I think I came up with an ideally fitting one. God is like a "dentist" and we all are "walking mouths" with several periods of life (that would represent teeth). Some periods of our lives get rotten once in a while, we feel pain, so we turn to the great dentist to help fix the aching tooth. Of course, we can drink medicine, or try to get used to the pain, but the main problem will not fade away, it will become bigger and bigger. So, the dentist comes to the rescue. Most of us fear going to the dentist, because we know that at some point he will induce pain. However, it's impossible not to if you want to fix your tooth, cause it's very vulnerable. The same goes with religion - it's all about having faith. He might create pain for you, but that's necessary for Him, this universal being, to fix the rotten period of your life, so that it won't drag along and induce pain in every other upcoming period. It's very natural when you think about it. So when you feel pain, when difficult times come, when you feel like walking on the edge, just know that a mighty being is fixing a part of your life now and soon enough you will go on happy to the next painless chapter of it. I might suggest also to not move while sitting in the dentist's chair... the process might be longer and more painful then. So just try to relax and trust Him. Believe me, He's a professional. Also, I might point out that, you can visit the dentist every day, but it's impossible to avoid the problems, because they are a part of being a human - we mess up sometimes, it's in our nature.

Trust the mighty dentist,

Don't let fear take over you
